The Israel – Palestine conflict has grown catastrophic over the last few weeks and has resulted in hundreds of deaths, casualties, and destruction on both sides. The much recent violence on a Gaza hospital, whereby an explosion killed patients and medical staff amounting to around 500 leaves a lot to be desired and underscores the need for immediate action to de-escalate the war situation. As president of the United States, President Biden has a unique opportunity to contribute to resolving the conflict at hand and promoting peace in the region. To do this I deem it best that he considers a comprehensive approach. One that prioritizes peace, humanitarian assistance, and international cooperation. This approach would be based on the following principles:
- Pursuing dialogue and diplomacy: Given his position President Biden should engage in intensive diplomatic efforts involving all relevant parties, including Israel, Palestine, neighboring countries, and international mediators to facilitate direct talks to establish a lasting ceasefire, addressing the root causes of the conflict and ensuring security for all.
- Independent investigation and accountability: An independent and transparent investigation into the recent hospital incident should be conducted to establish accountability. The U.S. can play a pivotal role in ensuring a fair investigation process.
- Humanitarian assistance and reconstruction: The United States could rally significant humanitarian aid to Palestinians affected by the conflict, focusing on medical supplies, shelter, and food assistance in collaboration with international organizations to expedite the delivery of aid and support the reconstruction of infrastructure in Gaza.
- Promoting dialogue between communities: Seek to promote people-to-people dialogue initiatives that encourage understanding, tolerance, and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. Grassroots efforts can contribute to long-term peacebuilding and counter extremist narratives.
- Strengthening international peacekeeping efforts: Exploration of the possibility of international peacekeeping missions to monitor and maintain the ceasefire. International presence can provide a sense of security to the affected populations and prevent violations, fostering an environment conducive to negotiations.
Pursuing Dialogue and Diplomacy:
Biden can seek to engage the key parties involved, relying on robust diplomacy aiming at bringing Israel and Palestine back to the negotiating table. Sincere dialogue coupled with a commitment to finding common ground which will pave the way for a ceasefire and eventually a peace agreement is a good point to start.
I do believe that leveraging its strategic partnership with Israel to persuade it to halt its military operations in Gaza is within the ability of the United States. In this, they could closely work with countries that have good diplomatic relations with both Israel and Palestine, hence would be better positioned to de-escalate the war tensions.
A lasting ceasefire agreement should be brokered. One that addresses the underlying issues of the conflict. These issues include but are not limited to borders, settlements, claims over the city of Jerusalem, and mutual recognition. A two-state solution as the basis for negotiations, is definitely one of the cards that could be played, respecting the aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians for self-determination.
Independent Investigation and Accountability:
The claims surrounding the Gaza hospital blast are conflicting, epitomizing the challenge of attribution in modern warfare. In an era of misinformation distinguishing facts from propaganda has become increasingly difficult. The U.S. intelligence assessment indicated Israel’s non-involvement in the incident. However, thorough, and independent investigation is crucial to establish the definitive truth.
To dispel doubts and to promote transparency, an impartial international investigation conducted by bodies such as the United Nations or the International Criminal Court is best placed to look into the Gaza Hospital bombing situation to provide a credible account of the incident.
Humanitarian Assistance and Reconstruction:
Regardless of political considerations or affiliations, prioritizing humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of innocent civilians caught in between the war a moral imperative. Coordinating international efforts to supply relief items and the reconstruction of infrastructure can provide a sense of hope and stability.
Beyond addressing the immediate humanitarian needs, Biden can also invest in long-term peacebuilding efforts that promote dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. This could look like grassroot initiatives that encourage understanding, tolerance, and coexistence between communities to counter extremist narratives that fuel hatred and violence.
Conclusion:
Joe Biden’ statesmanship, and humanity can make a difference not only for the people of Israel and Palestine but for global peace and stability. By seeking to uphold international justice, human rights, and international law, we could significantly draw closer to solving the Israel-Palestine conflict and the root issues in play.
